The Eagle Eye #85 – Bundesliga Edition

18.05.2016
Dear Eagles around the globe,

A few weeks have passed since we sent you the last edition of our little newsletter – time for us to inform you about the latest developments regarding the Eagles.

Meanwhile, the 2015/16 campaign has come to an end. The good news is that even though things did not look too promising after matchday 30, Eintracht were able to win three matches in a row, making them climb to spot no. 15 in the table.

Unfortunately, the Eagles had to admit defeat against SW Werder Bremen on the final matchday after a late goal by Djilobodji (88’), resulting in Bremen moving past Eintracht. In conclusion, Eintracht have finished in 16th position, which means that they have to play two relegation play-off matches against the third-ranked team of the second division, 1. FC Nürnberg. Only if Eintracht succeed on the aggregate score in these matches, they will stay in the 1. Bundesliga.

Let us keep our fingers crossed that this will happen.

Unfortunately, we have to inform you that just yesterday, Marco Russ has been diagnosed with a tumour disease. Marco, being the strong fighter that he is, nevertheless wants to play in the relegation play-offs. The doctors have allowed Marco to do so. Get well soon, mate! We need you. Our thoughts are with you and your familiy.

Our newsletter contains information regarding the upcoming relegation play-offs.

As always, keep on following Frankfurt – over land and sea!

Sincerely yours,

The English Eintracht Internet Team

Build-Up

Only a few minutes were missing last Saturday in Bremen when Werder scored late and Eintracht dropped down to 16th place in the standings. Now Eintracht have to battle it out against 1. FC Nürnberg who have secured the third place in Bundesliga 2 one week earlier. Eintracht will play the first leg at home before travelling to Nürnberg for the return leg on Monday, 23 May (20.30 CET). Nürnberg dropped down to Bundesliga 2 two years ago. They finished 9th at the end of the 2014/15 campaign but have played a great 2015/16 season under the auspices of their Swiss manager René Weiler.

History

  • Both teams meet for the 64th time. Eintracht have a good track record against FCN with 26 wins (D21, L16).
  • The last time both teams met was between 2012 and 2014. Eintracht were undefeated in this period with two wins and two ties.
  • The match v. Nürnberg is the third relegation play-off in SGE’s history. Against Duisburg in 1984 (5-0 win away, 1-1 at home) and against Saarbrücken in 1989 (2-0 win at home, 2-1 loss away), Eintracht managed to stay in the 1. Bundesliga.
  • Nürnberg’s relegation play-off history is not bad either. They managed to beat Cottbus – back then the 1. Bundesliga team – in 2009 after two wins (3-0 away, 2-0 at home). Also, they were successful v. Augsburg in 2010 (1-0 win at home, 2-0 win in Augsburg).
